IMPACT

Built a tech community supporting 200+ students, organized tech skills workshops, hackathons, industry talks, and mentorship programs.

Brief

Founded and lead the Google Developer Group (GDG) at Northeastern University Oakland to foster a vibrant tech community for underrepresented students.

I established the chapter from the ground up, creating a space for learning, networking, and mentorship. I led a team of 9 organizers to deliver hackathons, conferences, and AI/ML workshops for over 2,000 students. I moderated 6 industry panels and built partnerships with companies including Google, Pinterest, Salesforce, and Apple, achieving a 10X increase in engagement. Additionally, I secured sponsorships and coordinated logistics with industry partners, boosting event funding and participant reach by 95%, resulting in 40+ career growth opportunities delivered to students.

Learning and Growth

Leading GDG taught me how to drive initiatives end-to-end, from conceptualization to execution. I learned how to recruit, motivate, and manage volunteers, while collaborating with industry mentors and sponsors.

Organizing workshops, hackathons, and panels required balancing event logistics, participant engagement, and technical content delivery. I honed my communication, project management, and strategic thinking skills, while applying product-oriented principles to plan impactful events that meet the community’s needs.

I also learned to scale initiatives effectively, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all participants, and gained experience in mentorship, teaching, and delivering technical content to a wide range of skill levels.

Takeaways & Skills

Founding and leading GDG strengthened both my leadership and product-oriented skills.

Overall, this role demonstrated my ability to lead large initiatives, scale programs, and deliver tangible outcomes while cultivating skills that translate directly to product management, operations, and applied technology roles.
